A staircase with no ground support.

A standard spiral staircase created a real safety and usability problem for the people who'd actually use it. The replacement — engineered and fabricated in-house — became the standard for an entire development.

The development's standard villa plans specified a spiral staircase connecting the ground floor to a second-storey terrace, intended for domestic staff to access the terrace for laundry. As one of the first homeowners to build in the development, Anand was in a position to see the design before construction began on his own villa — and identified it as a real problem, not a stylistic preference.

A spiral staircase concentrates load awkwardly onto a single central point and disorients anyone climbing it while carrying weight. For a staff member carrying wet laundry up two storeys, often in a hurry, that's not a minor inconvenience — it's a fall risk built into the floor plan.

  • Connect the same two storeys, within the same footprint the original spiral design occupied.
  • Remain usable by domestic staff carrying wet laundry, in monsoon conditions, without instability.
  • The layout beneath the stair did not allow for conventional ground-level support.
  • Needed to be approved and buildable within the developer's existing construction sequence — not a redesign of the villa itself.

The brief wasn't "design a nicer staircase" — it was "remove the specific reasons this one is dangerous." That meant eliminating the helical climb-while-loaded geometry, and finding a structural approach that didn't need a ground-level footing the layout didn't allow for.

"If a standard solution doesn't fit the problem, we engineer and fabricate one that does." — the same principle applied across every Fulhaus capability.

The answer was a straight-run structure, suspended between two beams, with no ground contact at all — removing both the load-concentration problem and the footing constraint in one decision.

The floating structure was metal-fabricated by Fulhaus's own crew — not specified on paper and handed to the developer's standard vendor list. Because the design didn't exist as a standard product, it couldn't have been sourced any other way.

The staircase was installed first at the founder's own villa, ahead of the wider development's construction schedule — a live proof of concept rather than a proposal on paper.

The design was adopted as the standard for the remainder of the development. Spiral staircases were removed from scope entirely for all subsequent villas — a decision that shaped construction across roughly 400 villas, originating from a problem solved once, at the scale of one home.

This is the kind of judgment call Fulhaus makes routinely and, historically, rarely records — solving a problem once and having it become the standard for hundreds of homes, with the reasoning living only in memory. This page is one of the first attempts to capture that reasoning permanently, not just the outcome.
